Why did the City of Beaverton decide to purchase renewable power?

The City of Beaverton is committed to clean energy and thoughtful environmental stewardship. It is a value the city shares with residents and the business community. By pursuing this path, Mayor Drake and the City Council hope to lead by example, serving as a role model for other Oregon governments.

Part of that long-term commitment involves purchasing green power at the highest Platinum level in PGE’s Clean Wind program.

What are some of the City of Beaverton’s other “green” initiatives?

In 2007, the City of Beaverton issued a Green Power Challenge to its citizens and small area businesses to purchase renewable energy as a way to promote environmental sustainability and reduce carbon dioxide emissions in the city. The city’s goal was to increase renewable power participation by 250 new customers — 587 enrolled.

The city also became a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency “Green Power Community,” one of only 11 communities in the U.S., including five in Oregon, to earn this designation. The distinction goes only to those communities that voluntarily meet or exceed the agency’s minimum green power purchase requirements.

Beaverton also received PGE’s annual Green Power Leadership award for 2007 for its commitment to purchasing renewable energy and making its green power challenge such a success.
