Why did the City of Lake Oswego decide to purchase renewable power?

By serving as a leader in sustainability and environmental issues, the City of Lake Oswego seeks to help increase public awareness about energy conservation and add to the growing demand for renewable energy in the Pacific Northwest. Purchasing Clean Wind energy for its Water Treatment Plant reflects that mission.

What are some of the City of Lake Oswego’s other “green” initiatives?

To help guide its sustainability goals, the City of Lake Oswego adopted the City of Lake Oswego Sustainability Plan to clarify the city’s guiding environmental principles. Planned and ongoing projects address energy and transportation, water conservation, procurement, and waste reduction and recycling. Recent highlights include:

  • Joining the Cities for Climate Protection Campaign and beginning work on a greenhouse gas emissions and an air pollutants inventory for city operations
  • Switching city diesel vehicle to 5 percent biodiesel (B5)
  • Sponsoring the first employee vanpool
  • Automating city payroll functions to reduce energy and paper use
  • Adopting the “Water Management and Conservation Plan” and hiring a water conservation specialist to oversee implementation
  • Inventorying plumbing fixtures in all city facilities and prioritizing replacement fixtures for water conservation benefits
  • Printing Hello LO, the monthly city newsletter, on 100 percent post-consumer waste recycled content paper
